Charging mobility scooters

We know how important being independent is. If you have limited mobility, having a mobility scooter can help to increase your independence to get around without having to rely on others.

However, there are also fire risks associated with mobility scooters that means it’s important that where you live has adequate storage and charging facilities to make sure you and your neighbours are safe.

If you have one you must make sure that you are charging and storing it safely. This short video shows why this is so important.

The basic rules are that you cannot store your scooter in a communal area and you must make sure that you have a dedicated plug to charge it from. We have schemes available to help you store and charge your scooter. Get in touch and we can help you make sure you are staying safe.

If you’re thinking of getting a scooter, it’s important that you discuss this with your housing officer or sheltered housing advisor before you purchase one, so we can make sure there is somewhere for it to be stored
and charged without blocking fire exits or causing a fire risk.

Our policy on mobility scooters

Our mobility scooter policy has been developed in line with the National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) mobility scooter guidance to keep our customers and their homes safe.
